Detailed Course Information

  • ‍RIIWHS204E - Work safely at heights

This course set is designed for new and experienced personnel required to work in confined spaces and work safely at heights at an operational level typically in the resources and infrastructure industries.  Many roles require both confined space and work safely at heights training, including safety, injury prevention and maintenance personnel, engineers, risk managers, mine managers, cable installers and transport personnel.

Course Overview

Participants will learn to distinguish what constitutes a confined space and working at height; key terminology; as well as understand the regulations and legislative requirements governing entering and working in and around confined spaces as well as working safely at heights. Participants will identify hazards, risks and environmental factors as well as implement appropriate control measures; conduct two risk assessments and apply for two confined space entry permits. The course also teaches students to interpret and apply risk assessment documentation, technical and safety information as well as understand the strengths and limitations of the fall protection equipment available for working safely at heights.

Students will perform two work safely at heights scenarios using various safety systems. This includes installing equipment checking and correctly fitting, adjusting and anchoring fall protection systems and associated equipment.

Students will demonstrate how to enter, exit and work safely in a confined space according to an issued permit for two scenarios. Participants will also inspect and select appropriate personal protective gear; operate various confined space safety equipment including atmospheric testing/monitoring devices; and conduct routine servicing of all equipment and gear.

Qualifications Issued

On successful completion of the course students will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for:

  • RIIWHS202E - Enter and work in confined spaces
  • RIIWHS204E - Work safely at heights

Assessment Activities

Performance tasks:

  • Horizontal entry into a confined space
  • Use atmospheric monitoring devices prior to entering the confined space  
  • Work at height on a brittle surface
  • Work at height on a flat surface into a confined space

Documentation:

  • Completion of two site-based Risk Assessment (JSEA/SWMS) forms and two Confined space entry permits
  • Interpret a JSEA/SWMS and ensure the control measures are appropriate for the risks identified.

Theory Assessment:

  • A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must successfully complete all assessment questions.

Entry Requirements

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry: 

  • Psychological* and physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstrations for this course, such as the requirements to safely enter, work in and exit a confined space wearing appropriate PPE.  This may involve crawling and climbing up, down, through or under structures or confined spaces, being temporarily suspended, wearing harnesses and other relevant PPE, dragging and lifting in confined and restricted environments in dark, low light or smoke-filled areas.  Participants will need sufficient physical ability to lift up to 15kg from ground to overhead and access heights above 2m.
  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment
  • Language, literacy and numeracy requirements - students must be able to read and correctly interpret required documentation relevant to the confined space entry, speak clearly and unambiguously in English, explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues and understand the permit requirements. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms and producing any required reports. Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses and interpret gas test/monitoring results.

*Safe Work Australia notes “Working in a confined space may impose physiological and psychological demands over and above those encountered in a normal working environment. Consideration should be given to a worker’s:

  • physical ability;
  • ability to work in a restrictive space (for example claustrophobia) and ability to wear the PPE required to do the work (for example respirators).”

  • Online learning followed by in-person assessment.

Course Duration:

  • In-person assessment - approximately 6 hours to complete
  • Online component - around 3 hours to complete

  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to the course start time. Late arrivals will not be allowed to attend the course.
  • Wear appropriate attire including enclosed shoes.
  • Ensure you have verified your USI
  • 100% completion of the online learning material prior to arrival
  • Provide photo ID upon entry

Students unable to meet the above requirements on the day will have to reschedule in-person training.

Can I pay for my course online?

Yes. Secure online payment is available when booking a course. Full payment is required before you commence the course to confirm your booking.

Do you do onsite training?

Yes we do! For corporate clients interested in group training we will come to your business. Our onsite training includes access to our online training management system, where you can easily store all the details and expiries for anyone in your organisation who has completed our training. Visit our onsite training page for more information.

How long does it take it to receive my certification?

In most cases, your certificate will be issued electronically the same day you successfully complete your training. In the rare occasion this does not occur due to online processing systems, your certificate will be issued the following business day via email.

If you need it urgently, please let the trainer know and they will prioritise processing your paperwork. Please note while nearly all certificates are provided within the same day, we cannot guarantee the above timeframes. In all cases ETA Training endeavours to deliver certification after successful course completion as quickly as possible.

Where do I locate my Test & Tag License number?

Your licence number is located on your Statement of Attainment certificate. Use the last seven digits of the certificate number as the licence number.

Test and tag regulations in WA

WA regulations requires that anyone who does not have an electrical qualification should be competent when using a Portable ApplianceTester (PAT) when testing and tagging electrical equipment. To be deemed competent you need to have successfully completed a nationally recognised training course and received a Statement of Attainment.

Does hire equipment need to be tested and tagged in the workplace?

According to AS/NZS3012 hire equipment needs to be inspected prior to hire and once on site it should be tested once a month. If portable hire equipment remains on site longer than 1 month it should be tested and tagged every 3 months. If you are using hire equipment and it is due to be tested and tagged then it becomes your responsibility to have it tested.

What Australian standards should I refer to for testing and tagging?

AS/NZS 3760 is the main standard for testing and tagging electrical equipment and appliances. AS/NZS 3012 also has information on testing and tagging and is directly related to the construction and demolition sites. Worksafe WA have also published a free Guide to testing and tagging portable electrical equipment and residual current devices at workplaces.

What needs to be tested and tagged?

It is recommended that any cord connected equipment (toasters, drills, computers, power tools) and cord assemblies (extension leads, power boards, EPODs, computer leads, phone/battery chargers) in the workplace are tested and tagged. Any equipment that plugs into a low voltage (240V) supply should be tested, inspected and tagged to ensure it’s safe for use and meets workplace safety standards.

Does new equipment need to be tested and tagged?

You don’t need to test new equipment but a visual inspection must be carried out to check for any obvious damage. You are given this option for new equipment because the supplier is the one deemed responsible for making sure the electrical equipment is safe to use.

A “New to Service” tag can be used for equipment that is new and entering service for the first time. The tag shall contain the following information:

  • Wording “new to service”
  • Date of entry to service
  • Date when next test is due
  • Statement “This appliance has not been tested in accordance with AS/NZS 3760”.

Do you need to test and tag office equipment?

It is not a legal requirement to test and tag office equipment but the WHS regulations in WA require a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) ensure that all electrical equipment is regularly checked to reduce risk or harm to people in the workplace.

What are the test and tag colours for WA?

If you are working in the construction, demolition or mining industry you would refer to AS/NZ 3012 for test and tag colours:

Red: December, January, February

Green: March, April, May

Blue: June, July, August

Yellow: September, October, November

Check your local state/territory legislation and regulations as they may require tags to be a certain colour.

How long does the test and tag course certificate last?

The nationally recognised Statement of Attainment that you receive when you successfully complete your test and tag course does not have an expiry date. This means once you are deemed competent you are not required to renew your qualification.

However according to AS/NZS3760 all inspection and testing of equipment must be carried out by a Competent Person. Keeping up to date with workplace regulations, relevant standards such as AS/NZS 3760, Codes of Practices and Guidelines will ensure you have the skills and knowledge to competently test and tag.

How often is RCD testing required?

RCDs provide personal protection and save lives which is why there are strict guidelines in place for testing intervals. According to AS/NZS 3012 which relates to construction and demolition sites, portable RCDs require a push-button test every day. An operating trip time is also required every 3 months.AS/NZS 3760 recommends that portable RCDs located in factories, maintenance workshop or similar are subjected to a daily push-button test or before each time they are used.

How often is testing and tagging required?

It depends on what industry you are involved in and the operating conditions that the equipment is subjected to, such as vibration, heat, chemicals, dust. Mining, construction and demolition sites test cord connected equipment every 3 months. It is recommended that factories, workshops and manufacturing areas test and tag every 6 months.  For further information AS/NZS 3760 2022 and AS/NZS 3012 provide recommended testing intervals.

Is testing and tagging mandatory?

It is mandatory for businesses in the construction, demolition and mining industries to test and tag. For all other workplaces it is not a requirement to test and tag but all electrical equipment must be regularly checked and inspected to reduce the risk of injury or harm to employees.

We understand that unforeseen circumstances may require in-person course bookings to be rescheduled. To reschedule an in-person course, please email us at admin@etatraining.com.au

‍If we receive your reschedule request 2 or more business days prior to a course, no fees will apply.

If you withdraw less than 2 days prior to your course, or fail to turn up on the day of your training, no refunds can be given.

All requested changes to a booking must be made in writing. In the event of a cancellation request by a customer, a voucher will be issued to the value of the amount paid. This voucher can be used to book any future courses with us.
