Assessment Activities

What Assessments Are Involved?

To successfully complete this course, you'll need to demonstrate your competency through practical fire containment scenarios (using our virtual reality (VR) equipment) that include:

  • Responding to simulated fire emergencies
  • Demonstrating correct equipment selection and usage for different fire types:
  • Containing a small flammable liquid fire
  • Managing a metallic fire scenario
  • Operating a fire hose reel effectively

These hands-on assessments ensure you can apply your knowledge in realistic emergency situations.

Entry Requirements

Do I Need Any Experience to Enrol?

No prior firefighting experience is needed, but you must meet these basic requirements to complete the course:

Physical Requirements

You need the physical capability to participate in practical firefighting demonstrations, including:

  • Safely operating fire extinguishers and equipment
  • Maintaining stability while directing extinguishing agents
  • Managing fire hose reels with appropriate technique

Participation Requirements

All students must actively engage in the practical demonstrations to demonstrate competency in fire safety skills, including confining emergencies and applying basic fire safety principles.

Course Delivery Mode and Duration

  • Online component: approximately 1 hour of self-paced theory learning to complete before your face-to-face session‍
  • In-person assessment: approximately 1.5 to 2 hours at our Wangara training centre

To successfully complete your fire course training, please make sure you:

Arrive at least 10 minutes early – late arrivals may not be admitted

Wear enclosed shoes and appropriate clothing for practical training

Verify your USI (Unique Student Identifier) before arrival

Complete 100% of the online learning beforehand

Bring valid photo ID with you on the day.

Bring your mobile device and Training Desk login details.

Students unable to meet these requirements on the day may be asked to re-schedule.

What is first attack firefighting equipment?

They are the essential firefighting tools used during the initial stages of a fire emergency to prevent escalation.

How long does the certification last?

The nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for CPPFES2005 - Demonstrate First Attack Firefighting Equipment has no expiry date, so once competent, you do not need to renew your fire fighting certification.

What will be covered during the CPPFES2005 Fire Training course?

The course prepares individuals to use basic firefighting equipment and fire safety skills in various settings, covering emergency response incidents like small fires that can be controlled with a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, or fire hose reel.

What industries require this certification?

What equipment is used in this course for firefighting?

The equipment you will learn to use includes; portable fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, and fire blankets.

What is the first step in fighting a fire?

Don’t panic and remember RACE:

  • Rescue anyone in immediate danger (if safe).
  • Alarm – Raise or activate the fire alarm.
  • Contain – Close doors and windows to contain the fire (if safe).
  • Extinguish – Use appropriate firefighting equipment to put out the fire.

In Australia, what are the different fire classes?

Fires are categorised into six fire classes based on their fuel source, helping to determine the correct fire extinguisher:

  • Class A: Wood, Paper & Plastic – The most common type of fire, often involving clothing, rubbish, and cardboard. Most extinguishers, except CO2, are effective.
  • Class B: Flammable & Combustible Liquids – Involves petrol, solvents, and oil-based paints. Dry powder and foam extinguishers are ideal; never use water.
  • Class C: Flammable Gases – Includes LPG, butane, and propane. Isolate the gas supply and use a dry powder extinguisher.
  • Class D: Combustible Metals – Common in commercial and industrial settings. Examples include lithium, potassium, and magnesium. Use a dry powder extinguisher; never use water.
  • Class E: Electrically Energised Equipment – Involves electrical devices like switchboards and computers. Class E fires may result from short circuits.
  • Class F: Cooking Oils & Fats – Found in kitchens, involving vegetable oils and butter. Use a wet chemical extinguisher; never use water.

In Australia, what are the different types of fires and fire extinguishers?

Australia has six main types of fire extinguishers – water, foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide (CO2), wet chemical, and vaporising liquid. Each extinguisher is marked with a coloured band indicating its contents. Choosing the right extinguisher for your workplace is essential to meet fire safety regulations and protect lives.

Where do I locate my Test & Tag License number?

Your licence number is located on your Statement of Attainment certificate. Use the last seven digits of the certificate number as the licence number.

Test and tag regulations in WA

WA regulations requires that anyone who does not have an electrical qualification should be competent when using a Portable ApplianceTester (PAT) when testing and tagging electrical equipment. To be deemed competent you need to have successfully completed a nationally recognised training course and received a Statement of Attainment.

Does hire equipment need to be tested and tagged in the workplace?

According to AS/NZS3012 hire equipment needs to be inspected prior to hire and once on site it should be tested once a month. If portable hire equipment remains on site longer than 1 month it should be tested and tagged every 3 months. If you are using hire equipment and it is due to be tested and tagged then it becomes your responsibility to have it tested.

What Australian standards should I refer to for testing and tagging?

AS/NZS 3760 is the main standard for testing and tagging electrical equipment and appliances. AS/NZS 3012 also has information on testing and tagging and is directly related to the construction and demolition sites. Worksafe WA have also published a free Guide to testing and tagging portable electrical equipment and residual current devices at workplaces.

What needs to be tested and tagged?

It is recommended that any cord connected equipment (toasters, drills, computers, power tools) and cord assemblies (extension leads, power boards, EPODs, computer leads, phone/battery chargers) in the workplace are tested and tagged. Any equipment that plugs into a low voltage (240V) supply should be tested, inspected and tagged to ensure it’s safe for use and meets workplace safety standards.

Does new equipment need to be tested and tagged?

You don’t need to test new equipment but a visual inspection must be carried out to check for any obvious damage. You are given this option for new equipment because the supplier is the one deemed responsible for making sure the electrical equipment is safe to use.

A “New to Service” tag can be used for equipment that is new and entering service for the first time. The tag shall contain the following information:

  • Wording “new to service”
  • Date of entry to service
  • Date when next test is due
  • Statement “This appliance has not been tested in accordance with AS/NZS 3760”.

Do you need to test and tag office equipment?

It is not a legal requirement to test and tag office equipment but the WHS regulations in WA require a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) ensure that all electrical equipment is regularly checked to reduce risk or harm to people in the workplace.

What are the test and tag colours for WA?

If you are working in the construction, demolition or mining industry you would refer to AS/NZ 3012 for test and tag colours:

Red: December, January, February

Green: March, April, May

Blue: June, July, August

Yellow: September, October, November

Check your local state/territory legislation and regulations as they may require tags to be a certain colour.

How long does the test and tag course certificate last?

The nationally recognised Statement of Attainment that you receive when you successfully complete your test and tag course does not have an expiry date. This means once you are deemed competent you are not required to renew your qualification.

However according to AS/NZS3760 all inspection and testing of equipment must be carried out by a Competent Person. Keeping up to date with workplace regulations, relevant standards such as AS/NZS 3760, Codes of Practices and Guidelines will ensure you have the skills and knowledge to competently test and tag.

How often is RCD testing required?

RCDs provide personal protection and save lives which is why there are strict guidelines in place for testing intervals. According to AS/NZS 3012 which relates to construction and demolition sites, portable RCDs require a push-button test every day. An operating trip time is also required every 3 months.AS/NZS 3760 recommends that portable RCDs located in factories, maintenance workshop or similar are subjected to a daily push-button test or before each time they are used.

How often is testing and tagging required?

It depends on what industry you are involved in and the operating conditions that the equipment is subjected to, such as vibration, heat, chemicals, dust. Mining, construction and demolition sites test cord connected equipment every 3 months. It is recommended that factories, workshops and manufacturing areas test and tag every 6 months.  For further information AS/NZS 3760 2022 and AS/NZS 3012 provide recommended testing intervals.

Is testing and tagging mandatory?

It is mandatory for businesses in the construction, demolition and mining industries to test and tag. For all other workplaces it is not a requirement to test and tag but all electrical equipment must be regularly checked and inspected to reduce the risk of injury or harm to employees.

‍If we receive your reschedule request 2 or more business days prior to a course, no fees will apply.

If you withdraw less than 2 days prior to your course, or fail to turn up on the day of your training, no refunds can be given.

All requested changes to a booking must be made in writing. In the event of a cancellation request by a customer, a voucher will be issued to the value of the amount paid. This voucher can be used to book any future courses with us.
