Low Voltage Rescue training is an important safety course required, by law, in Australia for occupations working in and around electrical equipment. In this article we will go into detail of important aspects for LVR training, and answer commonly asked questions that we receive.

Our Low Voltage Rescue (LVR) course is designed for individuals employed in the electrical industry who need to have rescue skills for accidents or situations occuring with low voltage electricity. Typically, those who attend our LVR training course are experienced electrical workers who require this unit to keep their Electrical Service Industry (ESI) Network or other electrical sector license up to date.

Read on for information on important aspects of Low Voltage Rescue Courses, and more about our Perth-based LVR & CPR Course or our LVR & First Aid Course.

What is an LVR Course?

An LVR course teaches the skills and knowledge required to safely perform a rescue from a live Low Voltage (LV) panel. It is a mandatory compliance requirement for electricians and workers who perform live electrical work or work near live low-voltage switchboards and panels.

LVR courses are paired with either CPR or First Aid depending on your role requirements:

  • LVR and CPR: covers Low Voltage Rescue and HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. This is the standard annual renewal course for electricians.
  • LVR and First Aid: covers Low Voltage Rescue plus HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support, and HLTAID009 Provide CPR. This is for workers who also need a full First Aid qualification alongside their LVR compliance.

Both courses include hands-on practical assessment at ETA Training's Perth venues.

Choosing between LVR with First Aid or LVR with CPR

Low Voltage Rescue courses are usually paired with a First Aid Course or CPR Course.

First Aid courses include CPR training, so ensure to select the right course when choosing between LVR + CPR or LVR + First Aid depending on your needs as you may not need LVR & First Aid, you may only need the LVR & CPR course

Do I need the LVR & First Aid course or LVR & CPR course?

Different occupations and employers have different levels of First Aid training required.

Also, people may have already completed standalone First Aid training course, hence do not need to complete another full First Aid Training Course.

Each course will specify what units are included. Check your employer requirements against these unit codes to ensure the correct course is selected ie HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

For example, our LVR & First Aid Course includes;

  • HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
  • UETDRMP018 - Perform Rescue from a Live Low Voltage Panel

Training and assessment delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.

Can I do a standalone LVR course?

Low Voltage Rescue courses are not commonly offered as a standalone course, mainly due to the requirements of employers.

How much do Low Voltage Rescue courses cost?

Pricing varies across providers, there is no standard price.

Courses may be all in-person, or a hybrid of online plus in person.

Visit our LVR and CPR course page for current pricing and booking, or our LVR and First Aid course page if your role requires a full First Aid qualification alongside Low Voltage Rescue.

How long do the courses take to complete?

Course completion times will vary depending on provider, check the course details to be sure, taking into account online components vs in-person components.

Our LVR + CPR  Course is a combination of self-paced online learning which takes approximately 2 hours, followed by a 1.5 hour face to face assessment. The online learning component must be completed before attending the face-to-face practical assessment.

Our LVR & First Aid Course is a combination of self-paced online learning which takes approximately 3 hours, followed by a 2 hour face to face assessment.

Do I need any prior electrical experience to take an LVR course?

No prior electrical experience is required to take Low Voltage Rescue training courses.

What industries / jobs require LVR certification?

Any one who is working in and around electrical equipment would generally be required, by law, to hold an LVR and CPR or First Aid certification.

To give a few examples;

  • Refrigeration mechanics
  • Air conditioning technicians
  • Aerial installers
  • Labourers
  • Electrical apprentices
  • AV technicians
  • Electricians
  • Sound engineers
  • Plumbers

and many more!

How often do I need refresh my First Aid qualifications?

The Safe Work Australia Code of Practice recommends refreshing your First Aid qualifications every 3 years.

How often should I renew my LVR certificate?

The LVR certificate does not have a renewal date but companies will generally want a “recently” obtained certification.
