Choosing the right first aid course in Perth comes down to three things: what your employer or industry requires, whether the course is nationally recognised, and whether the provider can deliver it in a way that works around your schedule. This guide answers the most common questions people ask before booking, so you can make the right call the first time.

What First Aid Course Do I Need for Work in WA?
For most workers in Western Australia, the required qualification is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. This is the nationally recognised unit that workplaces refer to when they require a designated first aider, and it is accepted across all Australian industries and states.
The HLTAID011 course also includes two additional units delivered in the same session:
- HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support, which covers emergency response for a wider range of situations including cardiac and breathing emergencies.
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, which covers CPR technique for adults, children, and infants, and the use of an AED.
All three units are covered in a single enrolment. When people refer to a first aid certificate, they are almost always referring to HLTAID011 and the units that come with it.
Under WHS legislation and Safe Work Australia guidelines, employers are responsible for ensuring workers have access to trained first aiders based on the nature of the work and the size of the workplace. If your employer or site requires a first aid certificate, the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course is the correct qualification.
What is the Difference Between HLTAID011 and HLTAID009?
These are two separate units that are often confused because they are delivered together in a first aid course.
HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is the CPR unit. It covers chest compressions, rescue breaths, AED use, and the recovery position. It must be renewed annually.
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the full first aid qualification. It includes CPR as a component, but also covers a broad range of medical emergencies: anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, bleeding, shock, fractures, envenomation, and more. The HLTAID011 certificate is valid for three years, though the CPR component within it should be renewed annually.
If your workplace only requires you to keep your CPR current and you already hold a valid HLTAID011 certificate, a standalone CPR course covering HLTAID009 is sufficient for your annual renewal. If your first aid certificate has lapsed or you are obtaining your first aid qualification for the first time, you need the full HLTAID011 course.
What is the Difference Between a Nationally Recognised Course and a Non-Accredited Online Course?
This is one of the most important distinctions to understand before you book.
A nationally recognised first aid course is delivered by, or on behalf of, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). On successful completion, you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment that is accepted by employers across Australia for workplace compliance purposes. This is the qualification most employers and industries require.
A non-accredited online first aid course does not produce a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. These courses may provide useful general knowledge but they are not accepted for workplace compliance and will not satisfy an employer requirement for a qualified first aider.
If you need a first aid certificate for work, always check that the course is delivered by or on behalf of a registered RTO and that you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment on completion. ETA Training delivers courses on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd (RTO 90909), and all qualifications issued are nationally recognised.

Does My Employer or Industry Specify Which Course I Need?
In many cases, yes. Before booking, check what your employer or relevant industry body requires. Some roles and industries specify particular unit codes. Others specify that workers must hold a current first aid certificate without naming a specific unit, in which case HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the correct choice.
Common industries where specific requirements apply include:
- Construction and mining: first aider ratios are prescribed under WHS legislation, and site requirements often specify HLTAID011
- Childcare and education: the Education and Care Services National Regulations require specific first aid ratios and qualifications for staff
- Healthcare: requirements vary by role and employer
- Hospitality and retail: requirements are set by individual employers rather than legislation in most cases
If your role involves live electrical work or working near low-voltage switchboards and panels, you may need the LVR and First Aid course rather than standard Provide First Aid. This course covers HLTAID011, HLTAID010, HLTAID009, and UETDRMP018 Perform Rescue from a Live Low Voltage Panel in a single session. See the LVR and First Aid course for details.
When in doubt, check the unit codes required by your employer against the units listed on the course page before booking.
How Long Does a First Aid Certificate Last in WA?
The recommended renewal timeframes are consistent across Australia:
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: valid for three years. Most employers and industries follow this recommendation.
- HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: should be renewed annually, in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. CPR skills degrade without regular practice, which is why the annual renewal cycle applies to the CPR component even when the broader first aid certificate still has time remaining.
The practical effect of this is that most certified first aiders complete HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation each year and a full HLTAID011 Provide First Aid renewal every three years. Check with your employer or the relevant industry guidelines for your specific obligations.
What Should I Look for When Choosing a First Aid Course Provider in Perth?
The course content is standardised across providers because the units of competency are nationally prescribed. What differs between providers is quality of delivery, convenience, and the practical experience on the day. When evaluating a provider, consider the following:
- RTO status. The provider must be an RTO or a partner organisation of an RTO. Check that the Statement of Attainment will be issued by a registered RTO. ETA Training delivers on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd (RTO 90909).
- Qualified trainers. Trainers should hold relevant qualifications and, ideally, practical industry experience in the environments their students work in. Classroom technique matters, but so does understanding the real-world contexts that first aiders operate in.
- Location and scheduling. A convenient venue and flexible scheduling reduces the friction of completing and renewing your certification on time. Multiple locations, morning and afternoon sessions, and Saturday availability all make a practical difference.
- Class size. Smaller class sizes allow more time with the trainer and better hands-on practice during the practical assessment. ETA Training keeps class sizes small to ensure each participant receives adequate individual attention.
- Same-day certification. In most instances you will receive your Statement of Attainment on the same day you complete the course which means you can provide proof of certification to your employer immediately.
- Blended delivery. Completing the online theory component before the face-to-face session means your classroom time is spent entirely on hands-on practice, which is where first aid skills are genuinely developed and assessed.
Can I Complete First Aid Training Online?
Partly. The nationally recognised HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course uses blended delivery: online theory completed in your own time before attending, plus a mandatory face-to-face practical assessment. You cannot obtain a nationally recognised first aid certificate through a fully online course because the practical component requires hands-on demonstration of competency, which cannot be assessed remotely.
The online component of the ETA Training first aid course takes approximately three to four hours and can be completed at any time after booking. The face-to-face practical assessment takes approximately two hours at your chosen venue.
There are fully online, non-accredited first aid courses available. These do not produce a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and are not accepted for workplace compliance purposes. If you need a certificate for work, the blended course with face-to-face assessment is the qualification you need.
What Happens on the Day of the Course?
By the time you attend the face-to-face session, you will have already completed the online theory. The classroom session is focused on practical assessment: demonstrating your competency in the skills covered by the course.
At ETA Training, the face-to-face session takes approximately two hours and covers practical assessment tasks including CPR on an adult and infant, AED use, recovery position, and management of scenarios involving anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, bleeding, shock, fractures, and envenomation.
To attend, you must have completed 100 percent of the online learning beforehand. Bring valid photo identification, your mobile device with your Training Desk login details, and wear enclosed shoes. Arrive at least ten minutes before your session start time.
On successful completion, your Statement of Attainment is typically issued the same day.
